So besides emailing and calling parts stores, we have been exploring the area around Manzanillo. We walked around the waterfront in Downtown Manzanillo, where the commercial port is. Manzanillo is the largest commercial port on Mexico's Pacific coast. The waterfront is cool and has a nice park area with quite a few statues and art pieces. While we were at the waterfront, we saw some marine construction in action (I know...I'm a dork to get excited). A crew was dumping rip-rap along the seawall, which had been undercut by waves and was close to collapsing. The construction crew used a small tug to maneuver a barge of rocks next to the sea wall, then a crane lifted one side of the barge and all the rocks went crashing into the water right next to the seawall. I took a video, which will be up on the bar to the right soon. I'm sure only my engineering buddies will even care, but once an engineer...always an engineer.
We walked through the streets of downtown and found gas canisters for our stove. It seems the hardware stores here carry lots of random stuff. We need to go back and order more since we'll be here for a while, we only bought one to make sure it was a correct fit. All the bars were closed still because of the flu, so we mostly just hung out in the square by the water.
On Sunday we took the bus to Santiago, just west of us, and walked on the beach in the afternoon and checked out a possible anchorage. We want to move somewhere other than Las Hadas so we dont have to pay to dock our dinghy, but so far the other anhorages aren't very well protected. So we're hanging tight for now.
Yesterday we went into town to get a phone card and use the internet. At the phone store we met a pair of Irish brothers that live in Washington. Osheen, the oldest brother, was born in Manzanillo and has lived here off and on for many years. Last night we met up with Osheen and his brothers Patrick and Ryan, all down here since last week, at a Best Western, where Osheen had convinced the staff to let us bring in our own beers to drink. Since they aren't allowed to sell beers because of the flu, we got away with cheap caguamas of Corona at a hotel bar, only in Mexico. Afterwards we went to their beach house and sat on the beach most of the night discussing the US and politics (yuck, haha).
Well this post is way to long so I'll put up some pictures and be off, gotta make one more call back to the US and try to get some parts in the mail tomorrow.
Here is the tug and barge dumping rip-rap along the sea-wall.
Joaquin and Matt strolling along the boardwalk at night.
This is a sign at Soriana, a grocery store. No squirrels, parrots (hawks), or dogs allowed in the store....really?!
This is a giant sculpture of marlin along the waterfront in downtown Manzanillo.
