We left Puerto Escondido and headed straight for Antigua, Guatamala. It took us around 17 hours of travelling but we made it safely across the border and even got some sleep on the bus. We loved Guatamala, even though we only stayed in Antigua, whic isn´t real the true Guatamala. Antigua is like transplanting an old european town into the middle of Guatamala, complete with cobbestone streets and brightly painted buildings. Antigua was very clean and safe, even to walk around at night. We stayed at a hostel called Jungle Party, which the owner admits is a horrible name. The place was nice and very relaxing, with lots of hammocks and bean bags to lay around in.

We took a day excursion from Antigua to Volcano Pacaya, one of four active volcanos in Guatamala. We hiked several miles through foggy forest, then walked across slides of volcanic rock until we were near the summit. Up at the top, there was lava rivers flowing down the side of the mountain. We got close enough to feel the heat and smell the gases. It was a very powerful experience that I will not soon forget.

And check out the lava video over to the right.
