Puerto Viejo and Punta Mona

Okay, playing catch-up with the blog. Here´s what has been keeping me busy lately.

I left San Jose on the 15th and went to Puerto Viejo (de Talamanca) on the southern Caribean coast. Puerto Viejo is fun, but a little too party oriented. I took a hike east of town out to Playa Cocles, a long white sand beach surrounded by reefs. Playa Cocles has a good beach break when there is swell. By the way, no swell since I´ve been here. The next morning I rented a bike and rode down to Manzanillo, about an hour away, stopping three times along the way to enjoy the beautiful beaches. Necessary beach gear: Ipod, speakers, beach sarong and Imperial!

The following day I hiked 2 hours from Manzanillo to a farm community called Punta Mona. This farm is very self-sustaining and has a great permaculture system going across many acres of the farm. The farm has a large stretch of very private beaches, rooms for guests, and serves 3 mostly local vegetarian meals each day. There were about a dozen interns there when I visited and a had a great time hanging out with all of them for three days. Good to be off the grid for a while. Picking food for meals was also very satisfying. I also met two cool guys from another farm over on the pacific side, and plan to visit them sometime soon. Sounds like they have some cool natural building projects going on and are making lots of progress on their three year old farm.

This is the trail into Punta Mona, it was often muddy and very hot and humid.

Sweet views abound on the beach hike out of Punta Mona. Takes another hour or so but is well worth the miles of untouched beaches.
I hiked out with three interns from the farm who were leaving. Here´s them climbing up one of many muddy hills which we had to traverse between each of the beaches.
I stayed a night in Puerto Viejo on the way out, enjoying ice cream and cold beers, and then yesterday took the bus to Cahuita 30 minutes to the north.
